The black and
white works in this portfolio are monotypes. A monotype is
the transfer of a painting to paper. Making a monotype is
a bit like a performance; once started you can not stop until
the work is completed, or else all is lost. The spontaneity,
intensity, and a certain lack of control all add to the energy of
the image making.
"In
Friedman's monotypes, the muscular quality of the
rendering - swaths of ink are dragged away to create
broad painterly white outlines-gives the images a
primeval forcefulness and truth."
“Mr.
Friedman carefully plots broad areas of white that serve
as patches of sheer luminosity, and in the “Garden
Gate” the structure resembles a church, and a shadow
of a cross is cast on the ground.”
“The
black and white monotypes amount to the studies of the rhythmic
nature of the shifting line within objective imagery. The
emphasis on line transmutes features of the landscapes
into symbols - such as windmills transmuted into becoming
crosses and a shadow of a horse that turns into a demon
with extending tentacles that contain multiple levels of
interpretation . . .”
